Try getting the 8.5s heat molded or pull the liners out and abuse the hell out of em. Either should help break them in. If your toes aren't at all crunched or bent i would size down. If they are even slightly bent go up. Sounds like it might be worth your time to try a different shop if thats a possibility. Barefoot is comfier than vans, but vans soles are more comfortable than most other shoes. At least they aren't high heeled like most trainers or have painful arch supports.
