Hand crossbows are the best weapons in 5e. They are working pretty similar as to how they work in 5e. If you swap out gloom stalker for BM fighter you can deal even more damage. Sounds like the thing to do if you want balanced gameplay is just ignore the existence of hand crossbows.

If you choose Strength, Rangers in this game can pick " Ranger Knight " to get heavy armor. Dex won't be as important then. You're proficient in Dex saves, so you can do whatever you want. Thus, if they where pre-loaded you can dual wield once, then you would have to drop one in order to reload the other. The same applies to slings.
