I had one nurse check it at the hospital and it hurt so bad but then 2 other nurses + my doctor and it didn’t hurt at all. However, dilation really means nothing as far as when you will go into labor. Doesn't really mean anything. I was 3 cm dilated 50% effaced at 37 weeks with my first and didn't have her until 40+4. With my second I wasn't dilated at all at 40 weeks and she came 2 days later. Effacement is how thin your cervix is and dilation is how open it is. 40% effaced means that your cervix is 40% thinner than it is during pregnancy ...
