A = 1949. You can then look at the number range of the Stevens model on the chart above. They did not appear on a fixed spot on the gun and you need to remove the stock to find the code. Your Marlin Model 39 M (Mountie) was manufactured in 1980. According to a chart I have on production figures of the Models 39 A, 39 M, 39 C and 39 D ( well, all the 39 series from 1952) there were only 6 39 M's made in 1980. For some reason, production on the Model 39's was quite low for several years (1977 to 1983). I hope this helps.

It is important to note that some “budget” Marlin Rimfire rifles that were manufactured prior to 1968 did not have a serial number. Your gun certainly must have a Ballard style rifled barrel if it does not have 16 lands and grooves that is found in the Micro-Groove barrel. You are correct, the Model 39A with a serial number beginning with 27 was made in 1973, and is safe to use the modern, high speed ammunition. The big hub-bub on the Model 39 and high speed ammunition is for guns in .22 caliber made prior to 1932.
