Johnson outboard timing adjustment.

Hi. I have a 1985 Johnson 100 hp commercial outboard. The model number is J100WMLCOC. I cannot find the wot timing spec anywhere. I have looked many times on the net and here with no luck. What I am seeing is cranking at wot with the timer base rubber stop hitting it's stop is 21 degrees. Of course at wot this should equate to 25 degrees.07-04-2017, 09:20 AM. The pointer is called a timing fixture but it is really a tool to adjust the ignition to fire as close as possible to 180 degrees apart. Any kind of a tool would work as long as it was straight and fasten to the crankshaft If you set one set of points you could put the pointer between the marks.

The carbs does not have an 'idle stop' adjustment. The important is to get the carbs starting to open at the timing specified when the arrow on #47 lines up with the roller on the carb (pick up timing). From that point and down in rpm, it is all about reducing timing to get correct idle rpm. Only two timing adjustments to be set: 1: Pick-up timing.

Remove the s/plugs. Rig up a spark tester so that you can connect a timer light to #1 cylinder. Set the throttle to full throttle, full spark advance. Have the timer base pressing on that rubber stop. Spin the prop if need be if the engine is going into forward gear so that the dog and gear lobes mesh properly.

Apr 7, 2020. #1. Well I just checked the timing on my johnson 140 and in forward idle it’s supposed to be 4-6 degrees “throttle pickup”. I was at 16!! It was warmed up and in a tub of water. When I moved the timer base rubber stop forward till it hit, I was getting 4 degrees.
