I hadn't been back to Firelink for a long time, after struggling through the depths and Blighttown for the first time, and feeling like I had just come back from literal hell (took my first steps into the Demon Ruins). Looking at the Firelink Shrine there are a few paths you can take. If you decide not to go in straight away you can follow the left path around the exterior of the shrine. Haha. Yeah the game doesn't do an entirely good job on telling you where to go first. My first time playing I went to a place called New Londo Ruins, far below Firelink. For help, look towards the large castle looking structure from the Firelink bonfire. You should see stairs run along a mountain towards it and a couple of hollows.Go back to the Firelink Shrine from the skeletons and look to your left. There's a path leading up the side of a cliff. That's where you're supposed to go first. If you're struggling with this area, it might be too soon to be there. There are many other paths out of firelink.
