The Maverick is the same gun as the 500 except for the safety and forend. I have both. I like the tang safety and I like wood furniture enough to pay for the 500 if I ever buy one again, but the 88 isn't 'cheap as hell' and it takes the same accessories as the 500. They're almost the same gun.
