I am interested in purchasing a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3800 with only 84K miles on it. Everything inside and out is pretty much mint. However, there is a definite oil smell when running and when looking under the hood, there is oil (I think it is oil) visible along the entire length of the front/top of the engine.Sounds like it could be leaky lower intake gaskets. This has been an on-going problem (very common on the 3.1 & 3.4's). When the lower intake gaskets get old, the seals around coolant ports begins to seep a bit. And when the engine cools, the oil near these ports gets sucked into the coolant as it cools.I have done a bunch of 3100/3400 LIM gaskets, a few 3800's, and a couple 5.7's on GM vehicles. Directly related to an air bubble in the system IMO, the other is the lower intake gaskets getting destroyed from unchanged coolant. Both are avoidable, and fairly easy to fix. The 3800 can take coolant leaks better then any other engine I've seen.I drilled the block for the 3500 LIM gaskets. It only took approx 15 mins and it will keep the gaskets secure and aligned. As for the ECT sensor, I opted to extend the sensor rather than mess around with tapping the 3500 LIM. It only needed to be extended approx 6". Just make sure that you solder and shrink tube the connections.
