Yes a 800mm f5.6 + TC is doable. Actually, I was wondering about getting to 800mm f/5.6 by using the 2x TC on the upcoming 400mm f/2.8. In other words, put a 2x TC on and not use the internal 1.4x. My thinking is the additional length of the optical path that exists for the internal TC might preclude the usage of traditional TCs.

The 1.4 TC works very well with the 70-200, and IQ should be better than the 70-300 - but 280mm may be too short. The 1.7 TC is still ok if you stop down to f/8...

I trust these folks and if they says it's loose, you can bet it is. It also might mean they opted not to repair it for some reason as they have an in-house repair facility.
