I had my LG B6 OLED calibrated earlier this year after I used the RTings settings and the difference was not subtle. The major improvement is the greyscale adjustment. Your image will look more 3D when it is set accurately. A calibration also takes your particular set and lighting into consideration.

It is fine to confirm work one did using an external pattern gen (Video Forge Pro, Murdeo, etc..) - i'd suggest not even connecting the TV as the "Direct Display Control" if the LG is the source at all.
