A blue line must be present in the control window when you read your result. This line shows that the test has worked. If no blue line appears in the control window within 10 minutes the test has not worked. It does not matter if one of the lines that make up the '+' symbol is lighter or darker than the other; the result is 'Pregnant' (positive).

So I took a test this morning at about 06:45am, a clear blue accurate 6 days before you're due kind of test. I was watching the dye fade across the screen and I saw what looked like a very faint line going the wrong direction, I then tried to find it in some good lighting again and I can see that the test strip goes the complete different way.
