A friend believes the short may have destroyed the light dimmer portion of the headlight switch (he ran power to the fuse and the lights came on but dimmer function would not work.

I just got my new 2022 Silverado 1500 LTZ. I did not subscribe to Onstar. It seems that the functionality of the infotainment system is severely limited without it. For instance , I have to use Android Auto on my phone for navigation. Living in a rural area with poor cell coverage, this is problematic.
2) pull the radio fuse in the interior fuse panel (it's in the passenger seat footwell). It's a long shot but you might be able to get a software flash to correct the issues. Alternatively GMC/Chev has offered all 2016 owners a free upgrade to intellilink systems to accommodate Android Auto. Maybe there's an opportunity for you there. If the auto dim feature still works then it's not a wiring issue, so unless the display got shut off it's an internal mirror problem. These mirrors are not serviceable as far as I know.
