When it comes to DDLC, the one thing the Metaverse lore undermines is the original conceit of the game; that it was a dating sim where one character 'woke up' and ruined everything. It's been given new context which makes the experience less personal, but I don't think it ruins any of the really important parts of the whole thing.

My own take on the lore, pre-DDLC+, is fairly simple. That DDLC really was a relatively normal dating sim game in a fictional universe. What we see is the playthrough of one guy, the fictional player, whose copy of the game was 'cursed' somehow. Think of it like a Ben Drowned sort of deal. The player freaks out, eventually deletes Monika.
