Old thread, but I'll share a quick tip: Get the Destruction Gadget from Building Gadgets. It destroys (not mines, actually destroys) all blocks in a given area (max 16x17x17), but it doesn't destroy unquarryable blocks like allthemodium ore. So you can just run around at Y -40 to -50 and spam right click until you find deep dark, then ... Seriously, look for your first ore in a Deep Ocean biome. Find at least one and process it to create a Charm that makes it easier to find. After that, it is semi-smooth sailing on finding more. Also, look into ore processing mechanics so to get the most out of it. They give allthemodium nuggets and you can then make an indestructible allthemodiumsight charm to help you find more of it, and make the portal to the mining dimension, where it spawns everywhere, much more than in ocean biomes.
